Those Four Rs--Ways W Communicate--and Richard Rodriguez

Good work today class on disecting the "Aria"--I left class feeling enlightended by your input. And the glossing looked good overall. We talk more about Mr. Rodriguez on Thursday. Our last group didn't get much time to explain what they were supposed to expore. I asked them to explain why Rodriguez chose the genre of memoir for this writing, and how did he structure it. Tanya told us that it was a way for him to look back on a memory and see what it meant to him. But at the same time, as Arthur pointed out, he uses it as a way to make a political statement regarding bilingual education. What they were really doing was moving beyond participatory reading and into anayltical reading--something you will be doing for homework for Thursday.
Be thinking about how the 4 Rs help us to talk about the ways we communicate. You can see a short summary of them in the Media Room. Again, "these are not separate steps or isolated parts of our thinking, but they flow together as we work towards new understandings" (Kutz 41). Here we go again, thinking about thinking. Were there any other connections in your reading of "Aria" that you might share with the class? If so, let us know--the real learning begins when the discussion gets going.
