Living by the Code and Ethnography

Some difficult issues to think about today, but I think we shed some light on a few of these issues. Is it just to easy though for an individual to side-step blame by claiming it is the fault of the "system" or code? The notion of "exploitation" is a difficult one, but one to think about. And looking at discourses offers us a way into seeing the values that underlie the words. In the end, what do Green and Reed value? And you all uncovered some excellent aspects of shared knowledge, purpose and ways--issues like the silent treament, the threat, the conflicting discourses of money and God, the impact that history has on discourses (the immigrant/sharecropper).

So, I hope our close look at "A Loaf of Bread" will help you when you begin to look at your own discourse community. What kinds of things do you notice already about some of the communities you might study? What is the "glue" that pulls a DC together?
